General Counselling Questions

Who needs counselling?

Counselling can benefit anyone. You don’t need to be in crisis to seek support. Whether you’re experiencing life transitions, emotional difficulties, or simply want to grow personally, counselling offers a space for reflection, healing, and empowerment.

How do I know if I need a counsellor?

You might consider seeing a counsellor if you’re experiencing persistent stress, sadness, anxiety, relationship issues, difficulty sleeping, loss of motivation, or just feeling “stuck.” Counselling can help you understand your feelings and develop tools to move forward.

Should I see a psychologist or a Social worker?

If you are looking for a mental health diagnosis, formal assessments or psychological testing, then a Psychologist might be the right fit. If you are looking for a safe space to talk, heal, and grow through life challenges, then a social worker who tends to see problems through a more holistic lens. Is this a normal response to abnormal situations? Social workers acknowledge the diagnosis but focus on the person and their environment, social network, and strengths and challenges both individually and systemically. At Epiphany Counselling, we offer personalized support, whether you’re navigating everyday challenges or deeper emotional concerns.

What’s the Difference Between Counselling and Psychotherapy?

Counselling focuses on current challenges like stress, grief, or relationship issues and is often short-term and solution-focused. Psychotherapy goes deeper, exploring past experiences, trauma, or long-standing emotional patterns. It’s typically longer-term and used for concerns like anxiety, depression, or PTSD. At Epiphany Counselling, we blend both approaches based on your unique needs, whether you’re looking for tools to cope now or long-term healing.

What can I expect during my first session?

Your first session is a chance for both you and your therapist to get to know each other and share what’s bringing you in, discuss your goals, and decide on the right approach to take. It’s a relaxed, supportive space where there’s no pressure to have all the answers right away.

How often should I go to counselling?

Frequency depends on your needs and goals. Some people attend weekly, others biweekly or monthly. Your therapist will work with you to create a schedule that fits your life and supports your progress.

Is everything I share in therapy confidential?

Yes, your privacy is protected. Everything you share is kept confidential, with a few legal exceptions (such as risk of harm to self or others), which your therapist will explain at the start.

Can therapy really help me?

It’s a question we hear often — and it’s completely normal to wonder.

Yes, counselling can help. But it’s not magic, it’s a process. Counselling can help you gain clarity, develop healthier coping skills, improve relationships, and feel more confident in navigating life’s challenges. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit — sometimes just having someone truly listen can be the start of real change.🌿 At Epiphany Counselling, we meet you where you are — with compassion, curiosity, and no pressure. We believe in your capacity to grow, heal, and move forward.
You don’t have to do this alone.

Do I need a referral to see a counsellor?

No referral is needed. You can contact us directly to book a session; no doctor or specialist is required.

What types of issues can counselling help with?

We support individuals with anxiety, depression, grief, stress, trauma, relationship challenges, identity exploration, life transitions, hoarding disorder and more.

Can I switch therapists if it’s not the right fit?

Yes. Finding the right therapist is important. If you don’t feel a strong connection, we’re happy to help you find someone else on our team who might be a better fit.

How long will I need to be in therapy?

It varies for each person. Some find a few sessions helpful, while others choose longer-term support. You and your therapist will regularly review your progress together.

Can I get counselling with my partner or family?

Yes. In addition to individual therapy, we offer couples and family counselling. We’ll work with you to decide the best approach based on your needs.

What if I get emotional during a session?

That’s completely okay. Counselling is a space where emotions are welcomed, not judged. Your therapist is there to support you through whatever comes up.
